    First Transit Joins Sun Metro

On Tuesday, October 10, 2006 the Mass Transit Board of the City of El Paso approved the award of Transit Management Services to First Transit, Inc. The Cincinnati, Ohio based company will receive $1,615,557.00 over a three year period with an additional two (2) one-year renewal options. They began work on October 29, 2006

First Transit, Inc. has been entrusted to identify the best organizational structure and staffing levels; to improve operating effectiveness and efficiency; strengthen the financial management system; and develop a management system for capital planning including transit vehicle procurement and facility development. The firm will also provide a focus on customer service to provide safe, courteous, efficient and reliable transportation for the El Paso community.

"We are excited to be working with First Transit, Inc. They are an internationally respected transit management firm who will bring a wealth of knowledge to Sun Metro," said City Manager Joyce Wilson. "I am confident that the new team will have a positive impact on the mass transit system, the community and the employees of Sun Metro. I truly look forward to Sun Metro becoming a highly regarded and respected transit department in El Paso."

As the nation's leading provider of public transportation contracting and management services for the past 50 years, First Transit serves more than 120 transit authorities, DOTs, federal agencies, municipal organizations and private companies. The firm currently operates and manages over 120 transit systems; employs our 6,000 employees who operate and maintain over 5,200 vehicles; and provide over 200 million passenger trips per year. Three senior managers from First Transit joined the Sun Metro team Sunday, October 29:

    • Tim Omick, General Manager
    • TBA, Assistant General Manager of Transit Services (Fixed Route and LIFT Paratransit)
    • Sandra Rumping, Assistant General Manager of Development (Finance, Administration and Project Management)
The decision to secure a management firm was based on an extensive evaluation of the Sun Metro system by Joyce Wilson, City Manager; the Texas Transportation Institute; and McCollom Management Consulting.
