El Paso Museum of Archeology, the Centennial Museum at UTEP, and the Chamizal National Memorial present the opening of the three-part exhibit: Renaissance in Pottery: Casas Grandes to Mata Ortíz
The Centennial Museum at UTEP, the Chamizal National Memorial and the El Paso Museum of Archaeology will be opening a three-part exhibit entitled Renaissance in Pottery: Casas Grandes to Mata Ortíz. This exhibit explores the transformation of pottery making in northern México, from its prehistoric roots in the Casas Grandes culture to its modern expression in the ceramic art of Mata Ortíz.
The exhibit opens Friday, 4 May, with a special reception at Chamizal National Memorial from 6 to 7:30 p.m. that will include refreshments and a pottery painting demonstration. The exhibit opening continues on Saturday, 5 May, with a pottery making demonstration by celebrated Mata Ortíz potter Hector Gallegos at the Centennial Museum at 10 a.m. and at the Museum of Archaeology at 2 p.m. The Centennial will offer music, coffee, and pan dulce; the Museum of Archaeology will host a reception featuring traditional Mexican music by CEIBA. The exhibit and sale at Chamizal National Memorial runs through 31 May, through 15 July at the Centennial Museum, and through 15 September at the Museum of Archaeology.
The Centennial Museum is located on the UTEP campus at University and Wiggins; parking and elevator access to the building is available behind the Museum. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For more information, call 747-5565.
Chamizal National Monument is located in south central El Paso at 800 South San Marcial off Paisano.
