    Westside Community Center to Hold Grand Opening

    The Westside Community Center located at 7400 High Ridge in west El Paso will have a grand opening celebration on at 2:00 p.m. on April 27. The center which is almost a mirror image of the Eastwood Recreation Center in east El Paso will have two gymnasiums, a weight room facility, and other amenities that will accommodate the large amount of anticipated attendance on the west side. The Park located next to the center will be called Westside Park and will house sports fields and park complex.

    The center will also have an extensive after school program for area children and the variety of recreational sports leagues. A neighboring park will encircle the huge complex which will have sports fields, playground equipment along with future development of a skate and dog park.

    1st Annual Cinco De Mayo Women's Basketball Tournament. Held on Saturday, May 5,
    2007 - Registration April 2 To May 1 - One Day Tournament. $55 Entry Fee
    Referee Fee $20 per team per game
    Each team guaranteed 2 games. T-shirts to 1st Place, 2nd Place & Consolation



    Events at Carolina Recreation Center - 563 N. Carolina St. - 594-8934
    Registration is ongoing for participants in a Kick Boxing Aerobics Class that will meet on Tuesdays and
    Thursdays from 5:00 to 6:00 pm. Classes are open to individuals six years to adults and is non-contact.
    The monthly fee is $20. The class will help with general fitness, self-confidence, flexibility, and to improve your self defense.

    A Kickboxing Fighting Class will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm. This kick boxing class is high-intensity and helps improve balance, flexibility, coordination, endurance and self-defense. It is open for ages 6 and up and the monthly class fee is $20.



    Events at Galatzan Recreation Center at 650 Wallenberg - 581-5182
    Registration is ongoing at the center for T-ball, Indoor Soccer, and basketball. Classes being offered include Ninjutstu on Monday, Wednesdays and Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for beginners and from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for advanced classes on the same days. Each class is $25 per month.

    Dance Aerobics are offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The classes are $25 per month.

    Belly Dance Classes are on Tuesdays and Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and are $25 per month. Ballet classes are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The classes are $25 per month.



    NEW PUBLIC SWIM LEAGUE PARENT REQUIREMENTS

    -Mandatory Parent Class Schedule (See Link Below for Parent Class Schedule) -Player I.D. (See Link Below for Players/Coaches Photo I.D. Schedule) http://www.elpasotexas.gov/parks/sports.asp

    Parents must attend mandatory classes and receive a parent I.D. card from the City of El Paso Sports Program. This card is to be taken to Acosta Sports Center at 4321 Delta Drive, El Paso, Texas 79905 534-0254 along with the child to be registered (so a photo can be taken) and child's original county birth certificate (if not available a passport, Military I.D. or School Demographics with photo will be accepted).
    Parent I.D.'s to show proof of taking parent classes is valid for one year and child/participants I.D.'s are valid for 2 years. Each I.D. is $5.00.

    SUMMER SWIM LEAGUE REGISTRATION
    Where? Armijo Aquatic Center, 911 S. Ochoa, Suite A
    Who? Parent or guardian of participant
    When? April 3rd - June 22nd All Registration will be done at Armijo Center between the hours of 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

    What do we bring? Driver's license with current address, parent class I.D. card, child's Sports I.D. (see above), parent permission already filled out (available on web page under forms).

    IMPORTANT
    TAAF Swim Meet for Texas is the same weekend (July 26-29) as the City Public Divisional and Championship Swim Meet.

    SUMMER SWIM LEAGUE GOALS:
    • Teach and improve the four competitive strokes.
    • Promote physical fitness.
    • Promote team spirit.
    Develop a positive attitude toward competition

    Events at Father Martinez Senior Center - 9311 Alameda - 860-9131
    Rummage Sales: Friday, April 27th, 2007 from 8am to 1pm. Cost: $5.00 per space.

    Fr. Martinez Sr. Center will have a Hawaiian Dance on Friday, May 18, 2007 from 1pm to 5pm. Los Galaxies will provide the music. Cost is $5.00 per person. Snack Bar Available. Rummage Sales: Fridays, May 4th, 11th & 25th, 2007 from 8am to 1pm. Cost: $5.00 per space.



    Events at Multi-Purpose Community Center - 9031 Viscount - 598-1155
    Beginning Folklorico Dance Class on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 PM. First class free and $15/month.



    Events at Nolan Richardson Center at 4435 Maxwell St. - 755-5566.
    Nolan Richardson has an after school program that is being run in conjunction with Americorps members that meets Monday to Fridays from 3:00pm to 6:00pm. The ages for participation are 6-16. The children participate in various activities such as arts & crafts, board games, sports, field trips, special events and cultural activities. Americorps members also help the children with their homework.

    Registration is now taking place for Flag Football. The league is in two separate divisions with a 6-8 year old division and a 9-11 year old division. The fee is $30 per child and includes a T-Shirt and a trophy. Games will begin in April and volunteer coaches are always needed.

    Now taking registration for mini T-ball for ages 4 to 7 years. Games will be played on Saturdays the month of April and May. Fee is $30.00 per child and includes a baseball cap, t-shirt and a trophy at the end of the season. The league is always looking for volunteer coaches.

    Registration is ongoing for Classical ballet for ages 6-12. The class is scheduled on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and the fee is $20 per month.



    Events at Pavo Real Community Center - 9301 Alameda - 858-1929
    T-Ball & 5-Pitch Summer Leagues (Ages 4 to 7) at Pavo Real Recreation Center will begin play on May 29th, 2007. Registration fee is $30 per child. Deadline to register is May 11th, 2007. Register at Pavo Real Rec. Center (9301 Alameda) Monday through Friday 2-10PM Parents must attend a sports orientation class ($10). Volunteer Coaches are needed! For more information, please call 858-1929.

    Club Rec. Registration will begin on April 30th, 2007 at 2PM. Club Rec will run 4 Sessions of 2 weeks each beginning on June 4th and ending on July 27th, 2007. Registration fee per session is $80; however scholarships are available to reduce the 2 week fee to only $10 per participant. Sports, Arts & Crafts, Games, Field Trips, and more are the major part of this Summer Program. For more information, call 858-1929.

    Pavo Real Recreation Center will also have registration for Adult Men's Basketball Leagues, Indoor Men's Soccer Leagues, and Coed Adult Volleyball throughout the year. Call 858-1929 for more information on start dates and fees.

    The Spring Amateur Boxing Classic Tournament will be held on May 5 & 6. The event will be open to participants who trained at Parks & Recreation centers throughout the city. The event will be held on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Champions and runners-up will receive awards

    Mother's Day Celebration for the mom's of the after school program, craft project and cupcake to honor the significant lady of the house whether it be a parent or grandparent or aunt.
    3pm-7pm…Memorial Remembrance for veterans or currently serving. A display of pictures and storyboard on why Memorial Day is celebrated will be done by the after school program. Cook out for the veterans for their years and service plus dedication. After school children will decorate a flag for the veterans to give to them.

    MOTHER'S DAY CONCERT. Performing Tequila y Ron Band from Chihuahua City. $2 admission.

    May 1, 2007: Sign for Club Rec 6-12 year olds starting at 7am. Club Rec will be held Monday- Fridays 9am-1pm for standard camp. Classes in Cheerleading, sports, crafts, rock climbing, dance, Pilates/yoga, photography/power point will be available after the camp for a small fee. Call for a choice of activities in addition to Club Rec for working parents.

    Teen Leadership Camp for teens wishing to be a junior camper includes fun, educational sessions, and volunteer in training curriculum. Must 14 to 17 year olds. Pick up a contract and form on May 1, 2007 to be selected.

    May 12, Mother's Day Craft Workshop 10am-noon Come and make a Mother's day and gift for the special lady in the house, Open children of all ages only $1.00 per child., call to reserve a spot 629-7312

    May 23 & 24. Pool tournament for the seniors who are veterans, snacks and hot dogs. A salute to the Veterans. 8am-12pm at Eastwood Center.
