Gus and Goldie Leagues Teach Youth Sportsmanship

In 1992, the Gus and Goldie Youth sports leagues started and were designed to teach the children that participate to have good sportsmanship, understand fair play and making sure that every child plays. No score is kept in the league, as every child is a winner. The Gus and Goldie Mini-Sports Leagues now include T-ball, basketball and indoor soccer.

The league was patterned after the famous Gus and Goldie Learn to Swim Program started by William Cowan and Gayle Vokes in 1980. Now 16 years later the league is still going strong as youngsters from ages 4-7 can sign up and play at any of the recreation centers for the City of El Paso Parks and Recreation Department. The Gus and Goldie Mini-Basketball league is having registration at the Eastwood Community Center at 3001 Parkwood in east El Paso. Boys and Girls play together on the same team and games are on Saturday mornings starting at 9:00 a.m.

Dennis Elengold, center coordinator said, "Youngsters having a chance to play at such an early age will speak volumes for the better understanding of the game and working together with their teammates."

Volunteer coaches and officials are used on a volunteer basis in the league and each participant receives an official Gus and Goldie T-shirt at the beginning of the league. Practices are held for each individual team based on gym availability. For more information contact Dennis Elengold at 629-7312. Registration is available on weekdays from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The Multipurpose Recreation Center at 9031 Viscount is also having registration for their Gus and Goldie Mini-Basketball League, which will play on Saturdays, and the registration fee is $25. A Gus and Goldie T-shirt is provided for all registrants.
