Taxpayers Beware! Avoid Unnecessary Fees!
The City Tax Office has received several inquiries from taxpayers who receive documents from companies indicating they may have an "unclaimed refund." The companies offer their services in securing this refund. The customer authorizes the company to secure this refund by signing documents authorizing the company to act as a tax agent. Companies usually charge a fee of up to 50% of the amount of the refund, which is usually several hundred dollars.
The "unclaimed refund" is related to property homestead exemption, which requires a simple application that can be obtained at the El Paso County Appraisal District.
There is no charge for processing this application and taxpayers can save money by using this process. Call the City Tax Office at (915) 541-4054 or the El Paso Central Appraisal District for info should you receive one of these notices.
Do not become a victim.
