Neighborhood Boundaries

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Purpose

To identify the neighborhoods that define the city.

What is a Neighborhood?

“A geographically localized area within a community with characteristics that distinguish it from other areas. It generally has definition by physical boundaries, such as arroyos, drainage channels, natural or made-made boundaries. Residents generally share similar economic and social characteristics. A neighborhood shall be at least 70% residential”.

Process
The Neighborhood Services Team set out to determine how many neighborhoods make up our great city.

  • A small group of houses in immediate vicinity
  • Similar housing types & market values
  • Area surrounding a local institution (school/church/local institution)

The concept of neighborhood includes both geographic (place-oriented) and social (people-oriented) components.

The many interpretations of the definition of a neighborhood can lead to healthy debate on what boundaries are most useful in neighborhood planning efforts.
