Code Compliance

Code Compliance Inspectors work to protect the safety, health and welfare of our citizens by enforcing City of El Paso codes and ordinances. Inspectors patrol neighborhoods for violations and respond to complaints from the public.

Common Code Violations
  • Yard maintenance: Grass, weeds or uncultivated plants should not be allowed to grow taller than 12 inches. Remember that maintenance of vegetation in parkways and alleys is the property owner’s responsibility.

  • Sidewalk obstructions: Keep tree branches, foliage, hedges and shrubs trim so there is at least eight feet clearance between their overhang and the sidewalk.

  • Auto repairs: Auto repairs in a residential area, including apartment zones, are limited to minor emergency repairs unless the work is conducted within a building.

  • Commercial Vehicles: You should not park more than one commercial vehicle on a residential property. Oversized commercial vehicles parked or stored in residential areas should not exceed two tons capacity, 26 feet in length, 9 feet in height, and 7-foot-8 inches in width.

  • Illegal dumping: It is illegal to dispose of any solid or hazardous waste, like garbage, construction materials and used tires, in vacant lots and other non-permitted areas.

  • Curbstoning: It is prohibited to sell a vehicle from a public right-of-way, such as a street. Vehicle sales are also not allowed on parking lots without an auto dealer license.

  • Junked vehicle: An uncovered junked vehicle or junk vehicle parts may not be stored in a residential area where it is visible from the street or other public and private property.

  • Open storage: Storing materials outside that would not be generally used outdoors, such as indoor furniture or appliances, is prohibited.

  • Prohibited signs: Placing signs on utility poles, traffic control devices, sidewalks, medians or other public property is prohibited. Free-standing signs made of wood, metal, plastic, or hardboard larger than 5 square feet and 36 inches in height are allowed in a parkway only between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
