El Paso Museum of Art
Teacher Programs and Resources
The El Paso Museum of Art offers a wide variety of learning opportunities for
teachers in the El Paso border region throughout the year. The Museum is now certified
by the Texas State Board for Education Certification –the governing body
that oversees certification of Texas teachers –to award Continuing Professional
Education (CPE) credit to teachers who participate in EPMA teacher programs.
Whether attending Educator Evening or borrowing videos for classroom use, EPMA
is committed to helping area educators provide the most in-depth, quality art
experience for their students.
Teacher Workshops
Teacher workshops are hands-on seminars that help educators integrate art lessons
into a variety of classroom settings. Workshops are led by area educators who
are qualified to teach both art and the subject matter they are incorporating
into their session. From time to time, local artists are brought in to help
refine techniques specific to a particular media or subject matter.
Teacher Inservice
Inservice programs are generally three hours in length and present information
that familiarize faculties with the Museum’s collection and various resources.
This program also demonstrates how art can be used as an interdisciplinary approach
to learning.
To schedule an inservice for at least 15 participants, please call the Education
Department at 915.532.1707 at least four weeks in advance. Sessions can be held
either at the Museum or the school campus.
Keeping Connected
EPMA provides a monthly electronic newsletter listing current and upcoming exhibitions,
programs and events. The service was developed to keep area educators connected
to the Museum and informed of programs between editions of the Teacher Newsletter.
The Teacher Newsletter is a bi-annual publication expressly for K-12 teachers
in the border region. Newsletters are distributed at the beginning of each fall
and spring semester to school administrations to be delivered directly into
school mailboxes. This publication disseminates information about all Museum
services and programs to over 16,000 area educators.
Email wilsonnx@elpasotexas.gov to sign up to receive monthly e-mails. Be sure
to include your name and district information.
Educator Evening
Held twice a year, Educator Evening provides an opportunity for area teachers
to learn how to incorporate art into the classroom within a focused setting.
These events offer educators information about select exhibitions and resources
for cross-curriculum planning. The events are also an opportunity to celebrate
those in the teaching profession as well as to promote the many services and
resources available to them through the Museum.
Teacher Resource Library
The El Paso Museum of Art is an affiliate site for the national gallery of Art’s
Education Extension Program, which triples the number of materials available
through EPMA’s lending library. The Museum is a repository of educational
materials about the history of Eastern and Western art drawn from the collections
of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. materials include video-tapes,
DVDs, CD-ROMs, slides, posters and educational box sets. Materials from the
Resource Library may be checked out to in-service public and private educators
in K-12 classrooms. Home school parents may also borrow materials for use in
the home-classroom environment.
