El Paso Museum of Art
Community Outreach

The Museum of Art is dedicated to educating the public about the Museum’s permanent collection and traveling exhibitions. The Museum collaborates with local schools and organizations to promote and provide art education opportunities to the El Paso/Juarez community.

Community Presentations
The Museum of Art will present to your community organization or business about the Museum’s permanent collection, traveling exhibitions and programs. Please contact the Education Department at 915.532.1707. Please call at least a month in advance to request a presentation.

Neighborhood Kids Program
Neighborhood Kids The Neighborhood Kids Program is a multiple-visit partnership with the El Paso Independent School District to promote and improve art education to third through fifth grade students and their teachers in downtown’s Segundo Barrio neighborhood. Since its inception in 1998, the program has established strong working relationships with teachers, and encourages their return use of the Museum’s collection and library resources. The program enables schools to bring students to the Museum for repeat visits rather than just a one-time tour. Focused on one grade level at each school, these sequential visits establish the Museum as a familiar resource, making it a comfortable learning and teaching environment.

About 300 participating students and their teachers visit the Museum’s changing exhibitions four times annually. In addition, the Museum funds three part-time teachers to take the Museum’s curriculum into the classroom curricula and fulfills various grade specific Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards.

Neighborhood Kids Extension Program
Neighborhood Kids Extension The Neighborhood Kids Extension program is conducted with the cooperation of the Armijo Recreation Center and the local LatchKey Centers Unlimited, Inc. Both organizations provide quality childcare and educational opportunities for low-income families in the Segundo Barrio, the area serviced by the Neighborhood Kids Program.

Implemented during the summer months, this program is designed to promote the El Paso museum of Art as a welcoming and fun learning environment through the use of multiple visits. Students engage in discussions and hands-on activities to learn about the elements and principles of art. In addition, teen participants explore themes of cultural identity through the making of a community mural.

High School Outreach
High School Outreach The High School Outreach Program provides learning opportunities for students from high schools in local school districts. The goal of the program is to familiarize students with the Museum, its collection and purpose within the community. During multiple visits with EPMA staff, students discuss different types of museum careers as well as philosophical issues surrounding museums and collections. Another component of the program is to tour the Museum and use classroom lesson plans with objects from the permanent collection.

Each year, one participating school is selected for a more in-depth program. Students create original works responding to objects on view in the Museum’s galleries. The main focus of the program is to teach from artists on display. The effort results in a student exhibition housed in a community art gallery.
