Sun Metro, the City Mass Transit Department, is one of the largest City departments with nearly 600 employees and an annual budget of over $60 million. Sun Metro offers Fixed Route and Paratransit bus service within El Paso County and throughout the City of Sunland Park, New Mexico. Job Express is another service of Sun Metro, providing support to those individuals transitioning from welfare to work through transportation to job training, education, employment and childcare destinations.

At Sun Metro, fleet modernization is a priority to ensure core services are in place. $40 million was recently allocated for the purchase of 95 fixed route and 25 paratransit vehicles. Sun Metro continues to actively obtain funding to purchase new buses to ensure a continuum of service that meets current and future transit needs.

Sun Metro is the proud recipient of the 2008 Outstanding Metropolitan System Award presented by the Texas Transit Association for its achievements in the design and implementation of outstanding transportation achievements.

Sun Metro continues to place a high priority on capital projects to secure the future of our Mass Transit system and to meet our growing community’s increasing demand for transit services. Sun Metro is working actively to enhance the quality of service by pursuing high priority capital projects that are expected to increase community partnerships and revenue streams. Exciting public initiatives include: Glory Road Terminal, Mission Valley Terminal, Westside Terminal, Downtown Transfer Terminal, and ongoing transit advertising, accessibility, bus shelter and bus stop improvements.

The diversification of services will continue to allow Sun Metro to provide affordable service for the residents of El Paso and surrounding areas, while providing commuters with a viable transit alternative.
