El Paso Museum of History Receives IMLS Award
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), a federal granting agency, has awarded the El Paso Museum of History $150,000 toward the development of “Las Villitas,” an exhibition representing historic neighborhoods in El Paso such as Segundo Barrio, Chihuahita, Kern Place, Sunset Heights, and the Mission Trail. The gallery will include three or four exhibit kiosks designed and fabricated to be modular and flexible. Each kiosk will tell the story of a different neighborhood, with artifacts, photographs, text, and oral histories developed and on loan from the neighborhoods. At regular intervals, the kiosks will be transitioned to focus on new neighborhoods. This community-based approach will allow El Pasoans to take ownership of their community heritage and participate in historical interpretation. The Museum is looking to raise an additional $350,000 to offset actual construction costs for the project.
“As repositories of our nation’s treasures and our nation’s history, museums are positioned to play an integral role in the education of their communities. Museums for America grants support projects and ongoing activities that build museums’ capacities and help these institutions serve their diverse constituencies to the best of their abilities.”
- Dr. Anne-Imelda M. Radice, Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services
“With over 400 years of events, people, and changes to our border region, Las Villitas will venture directly into the community, providing a place for El Pasoans to tell the story in their own words and with their own personal artifacts.”
- Barbara Angus, Interim Director of the El Paso Museum of History
Matching the City of El Paso’s Challenge Grant
In 2008, after receiving the award from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the City of El Paso offered the museum a Matching Challenge Grant. The City would provide $100,000 in cash toward Las Villitas if and when the museum could raise an additional $100,000 toward the project. This has been accomplished through various grants and a personal outreach effort initiated by the El Paso Museum of History Foundation.
Recent Grant Awards
Over the last few months the El Paso Museum of History has received grant awards from Preserve America, Humanities Texas, the Institute of Museums & Library Services, Union Pacific Railroad Foundation, El Paso Community Foundation, El Paso Electric, Alltel, Bank of the West, Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc., J.P. Morgan Chase Foundation, and the Fan Association of North America. The Museum extends a warm “Thank You” to these corporations and to the many individuals and businesses that have contributed to the museum’s various programs.
New Memberships Continue to Climb
Since June, 2008, memberships have increased 40% at the Museum. Your contributions really do matter. Because you care, the Museum is able to pay honorariums, travel expenses, accommodations and a per diem for guest speakers, care for museum artifacts, build exhibit display cases, host small receptions; purchase much needed education and office supplies, and much, much more. The El Paso Museum of History truly appreciates your interest in the Museum’s well-being. Without your assistance, programming would not exist.
