The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Consulate General of Mexico and the El Paso Museum of History prepare to open two exhibits

October 16, 2009

Mexico, The Revolution and Beyond: Casasola Archives 1900-1940 (A traveling exhibit of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs)
The Casasola Photographic Archive exhibit brings together photographs from the waning years of the 19th Century when Agustín Víctor Casasola started his career as a photographer, up to the end of the nineteen thirties. The most unique feature of this archive is its clear historical perspective. The display recognizes two key periods in Mexico’s recent history: the Porfirio Díaz administration and the Mexican Revolution. Photographs have been selected that are relevant for historical reasons, but emphasis has been given to those that are outstanding due to their photographic quality.

The Taft-Diaz Meeting of 1909: A Prelude to the Mexican Revolution
October 16, 2009, marks the 100th anniversary of the meeting of President William Howard Taft of the United States and President Porfirio Díaz of Mexico. It was the first time that presidents from these two countries met face-to-face. The exhibit will include early 20th century clothing, invitations, menus, photographs, and souvenirs of a day that included a breakfast for President Taft at the St. Regis Hotel, the exchange of visits between Presidents Taft and Díaz at the El Paso Chamber of Commerce Building and the Customs House at Juarez; a major parade in El Paso with a speech by President Taft; and a formal dinner at the Customs House.

Casas Grandes, Casas Chicas: Cottage Industries of Paquimé and Mata Ortíz

A cooperative exhibition between the El Paso Museum of History and the El Paso Museum of Archaeology. This exhibit has been curated by Dr. Marc Thompson. It explores the cottage industries of Casas Grandes, a prominent archaeological site in Northern Mexico, and Mata Ortiz, a modern community in the same region. Included in the exhibit are over 50 examples of prehistoric Casas Grandes pottery, modern attempts to copy this pottery, and the distinctive style developed in Mata Ortiz. Other cottage industries represented are stone work and jewelry. Basalt manos and metates, mortars and pestles, bowls, and shaft smoothers are provided from the prehistoric period, and jewelry, tobacco pipes, and decorative stonework from the present. The exhibit also includes simple shell objects of adornment from the past and contemporary silver, turquoise, coral, jet and shell jewelry. Dr. Marc Thompson, recently retired as Director of the El Paso Museum of Archaeology, provided the photographs from the many images he has taken from this region.
