Art Binational 2008 Binacional de Arte
June 8 though August 24, 2008

Art Binational 2008 Binacional de Arte

The El Paso Museum of Art (EPMA) and the Museo de Arte Ciudad Juarez (INBA) announce Art Binational – 2008 –  Binacional de Arte , the first binational juried exhibition which will be hosted by EPMA and INBA from June 8 though August 24, 2008 .  Two artworks by each selected artist will be included in this exhibition. One artwork will be exhibited at EPMA and the other will be exhibited at INBA. This exhibition was curated by Christian Gerstheimer, EPMA Curator and Katherine Smith, EPMA Assistant Curator.

The exhibition will be juried by Ruth Fine and Luis-Martin Lozano.

Ruth Fine is Curator of Special Projects in Modern Art at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. Fine is the lead author of Mark Rothko: The Works on Paper, a multi-volume catalogue raisonné projected for publication by the National Gallery in 2010. As the curator of modern prints and drawings at the National Gallery from 1988 through 2002, Fine organized exhibitions of work by American artists including Helen Frankenthaler, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, John Marin, and Georgia O’Keeffe.

Luis-Martin Lozano is an Art Historian based in Mexico City. Lozano has written extensively about Mexican Modernism, focused on the work of Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, María Izquierdo and Remedios Varo among other Mexican masters of the 20th Century. A Fulbright scholar, Professor Lozano has been guest curator for all major museums in Mexico, and worked on projects with fine art museums in the U.S., Spain, Germany, Japan, Canada, Italy and recently China.

The purpose of this juried exhibition is to bring together artists and their art from a defined circular region along the US – Mexico Border with El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua in the center, Tucson, Arizona in the west, Santa Fe, New Mexico in the north, Midland/Odessa, Texas in the east, and Chihuahua City in the south. The museums want to examine what ideas, styles, and themes are being shared, and to identify if there is, indeed, a unique style emerging from this area.

On Wednesdays from June 18 – August 20, 2008 at 12:15 pm EPMA will be offering Artists on Art , a forum that will give some of the featured artists an opportunity to discuss their work in the Art Binational 2008 Exhibition. Spanish/English translation will be provided.

This exhibition, and all related events are free to the public .  For more information or to RSVP please call (915) 532-1707.

Human Value and Image: Recent Work by Gabriel Villa - Valor humano e imagen
April 10 - July 20, 2008

Human Value and Image: Recent Work by Gabriel Villa - Valor humano e imagen Obras recientes de Gabriel Villa will consist of five, large, portrait drawings and one installation of 18 smaller drawings that all focus on the human form and are, according to the artist, "developed out of personal examination and curiosity regarding the human condition." The subjects of Villa's idiosyncratic portraits are people from the artist's neighborhood and are highly realistic, but the details included reveal the inner psyche of the artist and the sitter.

Gabriel Villa’s most recent project includes the self published, The Art of Gabriel Villa . This 100-page book focuses on Villa’s paintings and drawings created from 1990-Present. Color plates of Villa’s paintings and drawings are featured, essays by writers including Fred Camper from The Chicago Reader and Christian Gersthiemer, curator from the El Paso Museum of Art. Villa recently attended the Ragdale Foundation Artists Residency in Forest Lake, IL. Winter/Spring Season 2008. Villa’s work will be featured in the upcoming group exhibitions entitled RASQUACHE at the Betty Rymer Gallery, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Fall 2008 and LANDSCAPE OF EXPERIENCE AND IMAGINATION at Krannert Art Museum, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Champaign, IL. Spring 2008. Villa received his MFA from Delaware State University and a BFA from Corpus Christi State University-Texas A& M.
